Active Living by Design: Increasing physical activity through physical design Active Living by Design is an incredibly innovate program dedicated to promoting community health through thoughtful physical design. The effort is a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and is a part of the UNC School of Public Health in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

“Active Living by Design’s community action model depicts how active living [1] supports can be incorporated into a community and should ultimately result in increased physical activity. The community action model follows a local active living movement from its establishment and strategies to short, middle and long term changes. The model is based on a logic model concept [2], using a diagram to illustrate a process of community change. The purpose is to identify key strategy areas and desired short and long term community impacts that are likely to lead to a more active community. The figure below depicts existing supports, strategies, short term changes, intermediate changes, and longer term health and lifestyle changes.”
